Long anticipated first performance of Arkulin
The first performance of Držić’s less known comedy Arkulin will be held on August 20
th, 2007. The play Arkulin was performed only once before, in 1997 on the stage of Marin Držić Theatre under the direction of the drama director Ivica Kunčević.
The present day Arkulin is directed by the unconventional Krešimir Dolenčić. The cast includes explicitly the actors from Dubrovnik; Predrag Vušović, Maro Martinović, Mirej Stanić, Srđana Šimunović, Perica Martinović, Nikša Kušelj, Niko Kovač, Ivo Mrčela, Frane Perišin, Branimir Vidić, Milka Podrug Kokotović and Nikša Butjer. Arkulin is a revolutionary play written after Skup and before Uncle Maroje, both Držić’s popular comedies. “Rome where one “could corrupt” exists no more. Now, everyone in Rome is already “well corrupted”, servants to their own petty interests.” – said Dolenčić. He turns the theatricality of Negromant to a “black might”, the one that benefits from the naïve and the greedy leaving them with nothing, alone and imprisoned in a safe environment of devour in cheap restaurants, in the world of low earnings, arrogant house, fiancée and honor trades. The eternal Držić’s theme about human vanity and greed has brought about great interest, judging the rate attendance at the play rehearsals.
