Dominican Monastery
Venue

The Dominican Monastery in Dubrovnik was founded in 1225. Mutual links of the Church and the State, which lasted throughout the history of the little republic, were already apparent early in the 14th century, but also in the fact that both the Dominican Church and Monastery were built in close vicinity to the city fortifications and walls. The Monastery was intended not only for church service, but also for protection and preservation of the city on its most vulnerable spot. Despite insufficient space and irregular shape of the venue, the church was quite huge, including the atrium, terraces, garden, refectory and dormitory. The church was built in Gothic and Renaissance style, revealing influence of the local builders. Members of the Dubrovnik families such as Crijević, Lukarević, Gradić and Gundulić were buried in the crypt of the Dominican Church.
