Revelin Fort
Revelin was built on a prominent site at the eastern entrance to the City, at Ploče Gate to defend the eastern approach to the Citz and its harbour. It is connected to the mainland by one stone and one wooden draw-bridge, encircled by the mout from three sides and by the sea from the fourth, southern side.
Its construction in stone started in the 15th century but the real dimensions and size the fortress got in the 16th century. It was built to the design and the model of Anton Ferramolino, an Italian architect from Bergamo. It is monumental and dominant but also very interesting for various architectural shapes, its roundness and sharpness as well as for its crenelations, sentinels, loops.
The fortress Revelin served several purposes through its history. Its original function was to defend but the Cathedral Treasury used to be kept there, also the City treasury. It was the place of Dubrovnik Government Council meetings, then a caserne for some time. In more recent times its wonderful huge open roof-terrace was the stage for many famous ballet dancers, folk groups and other musicians.
After its reconstruction the fortress Revelin today offers its unique and splendid interior full of imaginative charm of history to different events, conferences, gala dinners, concerts and other celebrations in regard to desires of modern tourists.
