“Uncle Maroje” Premieres on Full Držić Square

Date created: 10.08.2014.

As a masterpiece of Croatian Renaissance literature, Marin Držić’s comedy “Uncle Maroje” is one of the highlights of national drama literature and a brilliantly written scenario in which the author speaks of Dubrovnik, its citizens and lifestyle in a humorous manner.  This most well-known Držić’s comedy shares a very special connection to the Dubrovnik Summer Festival from its very beginnings, as it was the first play to ever take place at the 1st Dubrovnik Summer Festival in 1950 under the direction of Bojan Stupica on the Summer stage, whereas the adaptation by Ivica Kunčević from 2000 was the last take on “Uncle Maroje” up until now. This is, however, the third adaptation of “Uncle Maroje” for director Krešimir Dolenčić.

The play focuses on the seducing, palpable and perishable variable of money, with the main transaction taking place in a father-son relation of Maroje and Maro, who are supported by their capable and clever servants Bokčilo and Popiva. Rome, as a common plot location, is transformed into an anonymous scene, which irresistibly reminds one of that day’s Dubrovnik. Pomet, a wise and clever man, stands in the center of a world of supply and demand, rapid tourist tours and hospitality businesses, pickpockets, beggars, fortunate and unfortunate lovers. The play awoke great interest from the audience, as tickets to all performances were quickly sold out.

The director's team consists of dramaturge Mila Pavićević, language assistant Lada Čale Feldman, scene designer  Dinka Jeričević, costume designer Doris Kristić, scene movement assistant Valentina Turcu, Vesna Kolarec i Željka Fabijanić are in charge of light design, Willem Miličević , who composed the music and assistant Paolo Tišljarić. The Festival’s Drama Ensemble includes Maro Martinović as Dundo Maroje, Nikša Butijer in the role of Bokčilo, Filip Detelić as Maro,  Frano Mašković as Pomet, Petar Leventić as Popiva, Ksenija Marinković as Laura, Srđana Šimunović as Petrunjela, Nikša Kušelj in the role of Ugo Tudešak, Borko Perić as Tripče, Doris Šarić Kukuljica as Sadi, while Pera is played by Nika Burđelez, Negromant by Žarko Savić, with other roles achieved by Perica Martinović, Romano Nikolić, Ivan Magud, Nikola Baće, Maro Drobnić, Siniša Ružić, Branimir Vidić – Flika, Đorđe Kukuljica, Marija Šegvić, Anđela Ramljak, Gloria Dubelj, Ivica Bago, Kazuhiiro Tamari and members of the Theatrical Ensemble “Kolarini”.
