Philharmonisches Ensemble Wien was formed at the instigation of the Vienna Philharmonic violinist Shkëlzen Doli. It includes two other Philharmonic players, the violinist Holger Groh and the cellist Sebastian Bru, together with the internationally acclaimed concert pianist Gottlieb Wallisch. The musicians play a selection of works, ranging from the Baroque to the Modern. They attach great importance to retaining the particular sound and the distinctive musical style of the Vienna Philharmonic whilst performing in a chamber music setting.

Although classically trained, these artists also have other musical roots which lie in the traditional folk music of their respective homelands. For that reason they occasionally incorporate a taste of this repertoire within their programme.
