SIMONE RUBINO, percussion

“How he oversees, manages, plays and caresses the various percussion instruments gives the impression that Rubino is able to elicit every timbre possible from an orchestra.”

Neue Zürcher Zeitung

Simone Rubino sets off virtuosic fireworks of unheard-of timbres and rhythmical precision in his concerts – at the same time he dazzles with his sensitive and nuanced style.

Right at the beginning of the 2018/2019 season he will be premiering a new work by American composer Avner Dorman together with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in the same-titled hall. Another highlight of the season will be his residency at the Münchner Rundfunkorchester where he appears with three different programmes. Furthermore Simone Rubino makes his debuts with the SWR Symphonieorchester under the baton of Francesco Angelico as well as with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Joshua Weilerstein. In addition, he returns to the Deutsche Symphonieorchester Berlin to play MacMillan‘s „Veni, veni Emmanuel“ together with Sanntu-Matias Rouvali. Simone Rubino also continues his relationship with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI and Tan Dun.

His first solo album “Immortal Bach” (Genuin) that juxtaposes an arrangement of Bach's third Cello Suite with works by Xenakis, Boccadoro and Cage, has been described by the Süddeutsche Zeitung as „the virtuosic way, how Simone Rubino combines old and new, dynamically and as it were caressing, it is meditative and can be addictive.”

The young Italian who brilliantly won the ARD Music Competition in 2014, heralded a new era of percussionists who have since established themselves within the classical concert scene. He has performed together with the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the Deutsches Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Orchestra Del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, the Philharmonisches Orchester Darmstadt, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern and the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, working together with conductors including Zubin Mehta, Gustavo Gimeno, Manfred Honeck, Tugan Sokhiev and Kazuki Yamada.

In addition to solo performances, he finds himself drawn to chamber music, evident through his concerts with trumpet player Simon Höfele. Simone Rubino is strongly committed to expanding the percussion repertoire, collaborating with composers such as Avner Dorman, Adriano Gaglianello, Aziza Sadikova and Carlo Boccadoro.

Further to the ARD International Music Competition Simone Rubino has also won the Crédit Suisse Young Artists Award in 2016. He is a very welcome guest performer at renowned festivals including the Lucerne Festival, the Heidelberger Frühling, “La Folle Journée” in France and Japan, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Schwetzingen Festival, Musicus Olympus (Russia) and at the Pfingstfestspiele in Baden-Baden. Born in Turin in 1993, he began his studies in his hometown at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi before pursuing studies with Peter Sadlo in Munich.
