The Dubrovnik Summer Festival Opens in Gala Ceremony

As the Festival's Libertas flag rose to the verses of the „Hymn of Liberty“ before a numerous audience, the 65th Dubrovnik Summer Festival Opening Ceremony took place last night, 10th July, in front of St Blaise's Church.

This year's Ceremony, as well as last year's, was directed by Krešimir Dolenčić. The Ceremony was choreographed by Larisa Navojec, with Doris Kristić as costume designer. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra was contucted by Filip Pavišić, the Sudar Percussion ensemble with Matej Meštrović, who composed music especially for this occassion, the Dubrovnik Brass Band, Pro musica Academic Choir Mostar, Libertas Choir, Linđo Folklore Ensemble, Stjepan Radić Cultural and Artistic Society, Triko Circus Theatre and the Dubrovnik Musket-Bearers all took part in the Ceremony, along with the Festival's Drama Ensemble, the members of the Kolarini Amateur Group, Dubrovnik's high school students, the Ballet Department of Luka Sorkočević Arts School, members of multiple dance studios, junior players of the “Jug” waterpolo team and the children of Dubrovnik. Dr. Ivo Josipović, president of the Republic of Croatia, vice president of the Croatian Parliament Nenad Stazić, minister of Culture Andrea Zlatar Violić, along with other national and international senior officials, were all present. The Opening Ceremony ended in fireworks, which are a traditional part of the event.

This year's program will commence with the opening of a retrospective exhibition „Memory Creators – photographers and designers of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival“ tonight, 11th July at 9 p.m. in the Palace Sponza Atrium. Until 25th August, the 65th Dubrovnik Summer Festival will host more than 2000 artists from across the globe performing 80 drama, musical, balet, folklore and other programmes on more than twenty locations.
