Unique Evening of Bach and Jazz on the Accordion
One the world’s greatest accordion players who celebrated the accordion as an instrument in jazz music, outstanding Richard Galliano, performed with the Chamber String Ensemble of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra on Monday, July 18 at 9:30 pm at the Rector’s Palace Atrium.

After years of engagement in classical music, Galliano finally turned to jazz to “get released of all ties”, as he said. In highly rich and diverse career, he played with some of the greatest jazz musicians, like Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Toots Thielemans, Charles Aznavour, Astor Piazzola, who was also his great friend and mentor and others. For the Galliano’s performance of Bach’s compositions on the bandoneon, an instrument similar to the accordion and essential for any tango orchestra, critics said - “works of a master, performed by a master”. One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of the Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3, probably the most popular of all Bach’s compositions, which was performed by the Chamber String Ensemble of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. The audience at the Rector’s Palace also enjoyed Galliano’s composition Opale Concerto, with the first part influenced by his Mediterranean origin, second part inspired by his life in Paris and last part evoking the tango. Galliano concluded the concert with his most famous La Valse à Margaux.
After recent concert at the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, when the audience awarded him with the long applauses and elicited three encores, this great virtuoso on bandoneon appeared at the Rector’s Palace at this, for the Dubrovnik audience, extraordinary event.
