Respectable Zagreb Wind Ensemble performed at the 62nd Dubrovnik Summer Festival with guests Stephen Kovacevich – world acclaimed American pianist and Croatian violinist Ivan Novinc on Sunday, July 31 at the Rector’s Palace Atrium.
Festival's audience enjoyed inspired performances of the Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik for Wind Quintet, Papandopulo's Concerto for Violin and Wind Quintet, Ligeti's 6 Bagatelles, Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds, and especially extraordinary performance of the experimental composition Opus Number Zoo by Luciano Berio which is a set of four fable like, weird, ironic and dramatic stores about human nature titled Barn Dance, The Fawn, The Grey Mouse and Tom Cats and which was last night, not only played, but also recited by the Ensemble members.
Members of the Zagreb Wind Ensemble are ambitious and already established musicians, whose wide repertoire comprises works of all styles and époques, highlighting the 20th century music. Their interpretations, as seen last night, are marked by the harmony of joint performance of the quintet as a whole, as well as the quality of each individual member as soloist. Young Croatian violinist Ivan Novinc has won a large number of prestigious awards, has been a member of the Croatian Baroque Ensemble, concertmaster of the Cantus Ensemble, deputy concertmaster of the Zagreb Philharmonic and from 2004 till now concertmaster of the Zadar Chamber Orchestra. Adored by the Festival’s audience, American pianist of Croatian origin Stephen Kovacevich has built international reputation on profound and energetic concert performances and on the highly acclaimed and extensive discography. He has appeared at the most renowned concert halls and has collaborated with the world’s most renowned conductors and orchestras. Kovacevich also, as part of the educational programme of the 62nd Dubrovnik Summer Festival, gave a masterclass on August 1.
