Maestro Vjekoslav Šutej left us too soon, at the peak of his international career. Dubrovnik remembers him as a successful music director, who tirelessly and in difficult circumstances tried to turn it into a world music centre conducting Carmina Burana, a symbol of music in itself. The Zagreb Philharmonic cherishes him as its beloved and sorely missed chief conductor. Finding it incredibly hard to believe that eight years following his departure have passed so quickly, I decided to dedicate the last year of my mandate as artistic director of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival to the memory of my dear and always frank colleague, with whom I had the pleasure of talking about many things, from football and sailing to his favourite Italian opera which he passionately loved until his last breath. Harsh destiny took him to higher and unknown realms, leaving us music to remind us of him and to comfort us.
