Artistic director Dora Ruždjak Podolski's message to the festival audience

Date created: 03.07.2021.

"It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors." - Oscar Wilde

Dear spectator, welcome to the 72nd Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Our oldest national festival has proudly and independently preserved its format, built carefully over the years and intertwined with countless artistic destinies and worthy creative paths.

In addition to the original theatre productions that have been the Festival’s hallmark, keeping the identity of Dubrovnik as well as of the Croatian and European creative output, and a series of exciting music events that go beyond time and space, this year we again pay great attention to the programmes that enrich the community, both its youngest members and all those who have embraced the Festival as a place of encounters and new experiences.

We are therefore counting on you, dear spectator, and your skill of experiencing art, which is to mirror our work.

This time of change did not bring us only the negative aspect of isolation, despite the pandemic. Solitude is precisely what enabled all of us to get to know ourselves and our loved ones better, thus contributing to a slightly better and more aware world.

Birth of a piece of art is always a solitary act – but it gains credibility only when properly shared with others.

Dear spectator, we are very excited to see you at the Festival that has remained unconquered for 72 years. Join us at 13 locations and 63 performances during 47 days this summer.
