Programme “Writers at the Festival” to Be Opened by Baricco’s “Ocean Sea”

Date created: 29.07.2014.

The programme, named after the quotation “Sand as far as the eyes can see” selected from the novel “Ocean Sea” by Alessandro Baricco, will be presented to the audience as part of the 65th Dubrovnik Summer Festival in six evenings by four writers. The programme will start off with “Several imaginary scenes inspired by the novel Ocean Sea by Alessandro Baricco”, accomplished by the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in collaboration with HNK Varaždin, the Croatian Writers Association, Italian Institute for Culture and the Italian Embassy in Zagreb.  The selection of texts from the novel, dramaturgy, set adaptation, set design and selection of music were all made by Mani Gotovac, Robert Plemić co-authored the project, Belinda Radulović took on the role of costume designer, paintings were made by Ivan Midžić, Ann Deveria is played by Iva Babić, Plasson by Robert Plemić, Bartleboom by Bruno Kontrec with Ivan Čuić in the roles of the narrator, pianist and assistant.  Another performance is scheduled as part of the programme, taking place on Wednesday, 30th July on Šulić Beach, with a start at 11.00 p.m., versus 9 p.m., as previously announced, due to the ebb tide, in order to secure a low enough sea level to minimize noise. The author himself, Alessandro Baricco, will be present at the premiere. He will hold his literature evening on Thursday, 31st July at 9.30 p.m. in the Sponza Palace, where he will cover topics about writing, baroque music and about “Holden”, his school of creative writing, along with others. This will be the first ever public appearance of the, perhaps, most famous and most valued Italian writer and author of eleven novels, all of which are worldwide best sellers.

The “Writers at the Festival” programme will be continued on 13th August, when the evening with author Arsen Dedić entitled “Writer of All Genres” will take place in the Rector’s Palace Atrium at 9.30 p.m., alongside Matija Dedić on the piano, after which a documentary projection entitled “My Trade” will follow, taking place in the Jadran Open-air Cinema at 11.30 p.m. “At the Pearly Gates” is the title of the next author’s night with Ivan Vidić, scheduled for 17th August in the Sponza Palace Atrium, selected from the opus of short stories by Vidić’s recently published collection of novels entitled “The Southern State“, whose text will, specifically for this occasion, be adapted by  Krešimir Dolenčić. The programme will close with “Without Reflection”, selected from the collection of novels “The Dead Need Nothing” by Ivo Brešan, on 19th August in the Palace Sponza Atrium.

The “Writers at the Festival” programme is a sequence to last year’s successful project of the same name accomplished by the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and the Croatian Writers Association in collaboration with the author of the idea – Mani Gotovac.
