Pascal Bruckner is a French writer and essayist born on 15 December 1948 in Paris. Together withAndré Glucksmann, Bernard-Henri Lévy and others, Bruckner belongs to the group of “New Philosophers” who came to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s by abandoning Marxism and critizing Jean-Paul Sartre and post-structuralism.

His first novel published in 1976 was Allez jouer ailleurs, which was followed by Bitter Moon (Lunes de fiel), Parias, Qui de nous deux inventa l’autre?, Divine Child (Le Divin enfant), Beauty Stealers (Les Voleurs de beauté) - Prix Renaudot Award, Les Ogres anonymes, L’Amour du prochain, My Little Husband (Mon petit mari), House of Angels (La Maison des anges) and A Dutiful Son (Un bon fils) published in 2014.

Highly regarded are his essays: The Tears of the White Man (Le Sanglot de l'homme blanc), The Temptation of Innocence - Living in the Age of Entitlement (La tentation de l'innocence) – Médicis Award, Perpetual Euphoria: On the Duty to Be Happy (L’Euphorie perpétuelle, essai sur le devoir de bonheur), Misere de la prosperite - la religion marchande et ses ennemis – French Parliament Award for the best work in the field of economy and Aujourd’hui Award, The Tyranny of Guilt: An Essay on Western Masochism (La tyrannie de la penitence) and The Paradox of Love (Le paradoxe amoureux).

This writer and philosopher sends his philosophic thought as message through his novels. To fully understand his novels one should understand his philosophical-essayist view. The theme of decadent love relationships, filled with perversity, egoism, revealing yet another hole in our civilization which has unleashed the ego and eliminated the possibility of uniting, all in the name of public and personal freedoms, has been inspiring Bruckner and his, perhaps most popular, novel Bitter Moon. The novel became celebrated after the film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Hugh Grant, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emmanuelle Seigner was released.
