English Voices originated as a professional platform for the best of the singers leaving the pre-eminent college choirs of Cambridge University. It rapidly established a reputation as an outstanding vocal ensemble of precision and passion, and soon expanded its membership to incorporate graduates from the major British and European conservatoires. English Voices embraces those who have solo careers, but who still enjoy ensemble singing at the highest level, with singers being handpicked by the Artistic Director to create a bespoke and unique sound for each given project.
English Voices has excelled in collaborations with both modern and period-instrument orchestras and has performed operas and concert works with such ensembles as the Orchestre de Paris, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Orchestre des Champs-Elysées; as well as Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, Freiburger Barockorchester, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Through close associations with such conductors as René Jacobs, Ivor Bolton, Long Yu, and Gustav Leonhardt, the choir has performed in major international venues across Europe, America and Asia, including appearances at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, Lufthansa Festival, Shanghai International Arts Festival, Spitalfields Festival, and Beijing Music Festival. The choir enjoys regular performances at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, where recent projects have included Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni, Glück’s Alceste, Monteverdi’s Orfeo, and Handel’s Ariodante.
English Voices was founded in 1986 by the conductor Tim Brown, then Director of Music at Clare College, Cambridge. In 2018 Richard Wilberforce, who succeeded Sir Stephen Cleobury as Musical Director of Cambridge University Symphony Chorus, as well as conducting the Jeune Choeur de Paris and the Maîtrise de Paris, was appointed Artistic Director of English Voices.
