The Croatian Baroque Ensemble is the leading Croatian ensemble specialised in historically accurate interpretation Baroque music and the music of other related periods, performed on original period instruments and their replicas. Founded in 1999, the Ensemble consists of young musicians who are passionate about the original sound and stylistically informed interpretation of music. They received the Milka Trnina Diploma awarded by the Croatian Musicians' Association in 2001 and won the Orlando Award at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in 2014 and the Ivan Lukaćić Award at the Varaždin Baroque Evenings in 2016. Owing to their captivating, professional, stylistically clear and virtuosic interpretations, they are considered one of Croatia’s top ensembles by both the critics and the audiences. For the last twenty years they have been collaborating with the best artists of the international music scene, specialized in authentic performances of early music. Now, at the 70th Festival, the Croatian Baroque Ensemble are joined by the esteemed conductor Hervé Niquet. With his thorough training as a harpsichordist, organist, pianist, vocalist, composer, choral conductor and orchestral conductor, Niquet approaches music as a true researcher would, preferring to go back to its original source in order to avoid convention and habit. Such a spirit lead to him founding Le Concert Spirituel in 1987, an ensemble through which the French grand motet would be revived. Today, Le Concert Spirituel is one of the most influential ensembles in the field of Baroque music interpretation. The Festival audiences had the chance to see them perform in the Rector’s Palace atrium in 2014. Hervé Niquet is Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite and Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres.
