The Janoska Ensemble will perform on Monday, 24 July at 9:30 p.m. in the Rector’s Palace atrium their The Big B's programme, dedicated to musical greats whose surnames begin with the letter "B" but also to the almost forgotten art of improvisation.
These revolutionaries of classical music describe the atmosphere they create at their concerts as proportional to their joy of playing, which is greatest when improvising. “We give – we get – we give more – we get more – that goes on and on. Then the energy begins to circulate in the concert hall!” They will open their first ever Dubrovnik Summer Festival concert with Hungarian dance no. 1 in G minor, composed by Johannes Brahms, who found inspiration in dances such as csárdás or verbunkos. Then two pieces by the members of the ensemble will follow, František Janoška's composition Souvenir pour Elise and Roman Janoška's composition entitled ¡Buenos Días, Marco!, dedicated to his son. Continuing the programme with Romanian Folk Dances by the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, and another composition by František Janoška called 9 symphonies in 9 Minutes, the finale will bring the Blue Rondo à la Turk by American jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck and Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor.
The Janoska ensemble consists of brothers Ondrej and Roman Janoška on violins, František Janoška on piano and their brother-in-law Julius Darvas on double bass. Both families have a long musical tradition - the Janoskas have been playing for six generations, and Julius Darvas belongs to the third generation of double bass players. All members of the ensemble have first-class classical training and award-winning solo mastery. Janoska's style, which separates this ensemble from similar ones, is a shared musical vision based on classical music, and combining jazz, pop and other stylistic elements. To date, they have released three albums: Janoska Style in 2016, Revolution in 2019 and The Big B's in 2022.
