The Family Theater Project, funded by the European Commission, brings together partners from Italy, Hungary, Croatia and Ireland in a joint research and reflection on theatres that are not only for families, but also with families. At the heart of the project is the idea of theatre as a space for intergenerational interaction, actively involving children, parents and older family members in a shared cultural experience.
As part of the first phase of the project, a study entitled VP2 Research and Evaluation of Theatre was conducted in the period from October 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025, the results of which are summarized in the Current Situation Report. This document provides an overview of the state of family theatre in Europe, including data collected through desk research, interviews with families, artists and other stakeholders, as well as examples of existing good practices in the partner countries.

The project also announced the holding of the first Online Caffè, a zoom meeting that will present the main results of the research and open a space for further dialogue on the future of family theater. The Online Caffè will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, via the Zoom platform. The program will include a short interactive introduction to the topic, a presentation of research results collected in Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Ireland, and a final discussion with families and experts from the cultural and educational sectors. The meeting will be held in English (the official language of the project) and is open and free to all those working in the fields of culture, theater and education.
This meeting begins a series of joint reflections and listening sessions, the aim of which is to develop a theater that truly includes everyone — both young and old — in a meaningful, creative and socially relevant theater environment.
