The 74th Dubrovnik Summer Festival theatre programme opened last night, 12 July, on the Island of Lokrum with the premiere of the play See How Lokrum Brushes Its Teeth, based on the eponymous Ivana Lovrić Jović novel and directed by Paolo Tišljarić. This co-production of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and Marin Držić Theatre was made with the generous support of Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (Croatian Electric Company).
The play See How Lokrum Brushes Its Teeth intertwines the stories of four women, four generations whose fate is inextricably linked to Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik stone. Set on the beautiful island of Lokrum, the talented cast took the audience on an emotionally charged, introspective journey that explores themes of family and growing up, memory and nostalgia, loss and love. At the same time, the music created a special atmosphere, so at the end of the premiere, the audience sang to the well-known tune of the Italian ballad "Volare/Nel blu dipinto di blu" together with the actors, rewarding them with abundant applause and shouts of "bravo!".
"For us from the theatre, it is very important to participate in our oldest and most important Festival, and this co-production is the crown of my work at the Marin Držić Theatre in the last six years. The reinforcements of our ensemble – the beautiful Sandra Lončarić, theatre champion, Anja Đurinović, a Gavella actress and our Perica Martinović, whom everyone knows very well – made the theatre breathe a new sort of energy, in synergy with the Festival. I think that this is also a pledge for the future and that such collaborations should happen year after year and that, like Sad Jele, for example, this play has that very interesting and melancholic something that is very special for Dubrovnik," pointed out after the premiere Marin Držić Theatre Director and the director of the play Paolo Tišljarić.
Powerful performances were given by the talented cast led by Marija Šegvić in the role of Antica, Sandra Lončarić as her mother Lunette, Mirej Stanić as her grandmother Anna, and Anja Đurinović as her daughter Nuša, while Perica Martinović, Nika Lasić, Boris Matić and Bojan Beribaka were the choir.
The creative team spared no effort in creating a visually impressive experience for the audience. In addition to the director Paolo Tišljarić, they are dramaturge Marijana Fumić, set designer Vesna Režić, costume designer Ana Mikulić, lighting designer Marko Mijatović, music composer and sound designer Žarko Dragojević, video projection designer Miran Brautović, assistant set designer Nikolina Kuzmić, assistant costume designer Petra Andrić, music associate and guitar songs arranger Bojan Beribaka, and stage manager Anita Bubalo.
The play is on the repertoire tonight 13 July, and tomorrow 14 July at 9:30 p.m and the boat to Lokrum leaves the Old Town Port at 8:45 each evening. The return is immediately after the performance.
