Davor Mojaš: SO MUCH FOR THE BIRDS

Directed by: Davor Mojaš

--

In recent years, the productions of the Lero Student Theatre have regularly been on the Dubrovnik Summer Festival theatre programme. Their latest production, So Much for the Birds, directed by Davor Mojaš, is marked by Lero’s distinct poetics, containing the texts by Milan Milišić, Luko Paljetak, Vjeran Zuppa, Dubrovnik patrician Tomo Basiljević (1756 – 1806) and Aristophanes. So Much for the Birds tells an interesting and intriguing story about Dubrovnik, its changes through the centuries and its everyday life, with birds only serving as an excuse for self-reflection, recognition, revelations, and forebodings with consequences. The play takes its title from Milan Milišić’s poem from 1972, the year Ivica Kunčević directed Aristophanes’s Lysistrata at the Lero Theatre. This new production of the Lero Theatre is dedicated to the memory of its long-time friends and associates who, each in their own way, marked its rich 55-year-long history. It is also dedicated to Vjeran Zuppa, who in 1987 wrote the poem Oedipus’s Room, a dedication to Paolo Magelli on the occasion of his staging of The Phoenician Women on Lovrijenac. So Much for the Birds is a poetic Mediterranean amarcord interwoven with forebodings, dreams and memories, which, unlike people, cannot move away and never return. They live in this City in every sigh of those left behind. In steps that grow shorter and slower. In the silence in which they are hidden. Among the stone veins and planters brimming with with geraniums and basil. There are more and more pigeons, and fewer and fewer people who feed them. All left together in the theatre. In the City that gave birth to Lero. In which we are the audience, and actors, and birds that will not fly.
