Fado Superstar Mariza Performs on the Revelin Fort

Date created: 13.07.2023.

The 74th Dubrovnik Summer Festival music programme brings one of the biggest fado music stars, Mariza, on the Revelin Fort terrace on Saturday, 15 July at 9.30 pm. For the Dubrovnik audience she will perform songs from her latest album Mariza canta Amalia. The sold-out concert is powered by Mastercard.

According to many, the successor of the queen of fado Amália Rodrigues, Mariza has risen over the last decades from a local phenomenon known only to a small circle of admireres in Lisbon, to the status of one of the biggest stars on the international music circuit and has become one of the most celebrated contemporary ambassadors of Portuguese music in general. It all started in 2001 with her debut album Fado em Mim and the hit Ó Gente da minha Terra by the young composer Tiago Machado, and her vibrant voice and strong artistic personality have since brought her platinum albums, collaborations with the biggest names on the world music scene, performances on famous international stages and festivals as well as numerous awards, among which stand out three BBC Radio 3 awards for the best European musician in the world music genre and several nominations for the Latin Grammy. No Portuguese artist since Amália Rodrigues has experienced such a triumphant international career, accumulating raving reviews from the most demanding music critics worldwide and countless international awards and distinctions, achieving success after success on the world's biggest stages – including the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, in which the scenography for the performance was made especially for her by one of the world's greatest architects, Frank Gehry.

Mariza celebrated twenty years of her career, and the hundredth birthday of the late queen of fado Amália Rodrigues, with the release of Mariza canta Amalia, the first album on which she exclusively sings the classics, and which was released in 2021 by Warner Bros Records. The festival audience at Revelin Fort will hear not only these songs, but some of her biggest hits, and the programme will also include new works yet to be released on an upcoming album set to be released in September of this year.
