One of the most sought-after and versatile musicians today, cellist Nicolas Altstaedt will perform tonight, 31 July at 9:30 p.m. in the Rector’s Palace atrium, and on the repertoire are compositions by Henri Dutilleux, Johann Sebastian Bach, Jörg Widmann and Zoltán Kodály.

The soloist recital is a particular favourite, but also demanding concert subspecies, because all sound possibilities come to the fore; the performer and the instrument are completely exposed and do not have a single moment of respite. At his first of two Dubrovnik concerts this summer, a solo recital, Altstaedt will perform canonical works for cello – one of Bach's Suites – but also more recent classics, Kodály's Sonata, as well as a Dutilleux homage to Paul Sacher, and a more recent solo pieces by the currently active composer Jörg Widmann.

Nicolas Altstaedt (Heidelberg, 1982) performs as a soloist, conductor and artistic director a wide repertoire ranging from early to contemporary music, playing on historical and modern instruments. Since his acclaimed debut with the Vienna Philharmonic and Gustav Dudamel at the Lucerne Festival, he regularly performs with the world's most prestigious orchestras and regularly collaborates with numerous excellent ensembles and conductors. In 2012, Altstaedt succeeded Gidon Kremer as artistic director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, while in 2014 he succeeded Ádám Fischer at the same position at the Haydn Philharmonic at the Ésterházy Palace, with which he toured Japan and China in the last seasons. He has received numerous prizes including the Beethovenring Bonn 2015 and Musikpreis der Stadt Duisburg 2018. His most recent recording for his Lockenhaus Festival garnered the BBC Music Magazine 2020 Chamber Award and Grammophone Award 2020. He received the BBC Music Magazine Concerto Award 2017 for his recording of CPE Bach Concertos on Hyperion with Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen and the Edison Klassiek 2017 for his Recital Recording with Fazil Say on Warner Classics. Nicolas is a recipient of the Credit Suisse Award in 2010 and was a BBC New Generation Artist 2010-2012.
