World-renowned bass-baritone Marko Mimica and Cuban pianist Marcos Madrigal at the Rector’s Palace

Renowned Croatian bass-baritone Marko Mimica and Cuban pianist Marcos Madrigal will perform on Friday, 28 July at 9:30 pm in the Rector’s Palace atrium. The festival audience can expect an interesting musical evening with a lieder and arias programme specially created for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

The programme will begin Hugo Wolf’s Michelangelo-Lieder, which are characterized by the so-called late, ascetic style and simple structure, enabling the focus on the content. This will be followed by Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, written by Maurice Ravel for the film adaptation of Don Quixote with Feodor Chaliapin, and two pieces by famous Russian composer and pianist Dmitri Shostakovich, Prelude, Op. 34, and Polka. The programme will end with Songs and Dances of Death by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, through which the composer masterfully sets new standards for the musical portrayal of gloom, suffering and the inevitability of death.

Croatian bass-baritone Marko Mimica (Split, 1987) graduated from the Academy of Music in Zagreb. He made his opera debut in 2008 as Papageno in Mozart’s Magic Flute (Croatian National Theatres of Zagreb and Rijeka). From 2011 to 2016, he was a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, interpreting many opera roles.  In the past season, Mimica returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in La forza del destino and Hérodiad, and has recently performed around the globe, including Barcelona, Amsterdam, Palermo, Torino, Palm Beach and New York. He participated in the Salzburger Festspiele's Young Singers Project in 2011 and was among the finalists of the Cardiff Singer of the World in 2013.

Marcos Madrigal (Havana, 1984) graduated with honors from the University of Arts of Cuba (ISA) in 2007, under the guidance of the renowned professor and pianist Teresita Junco. He attended masterclasses at the Conservatory of Southern Switzerland in Lugano and at the International Piano Academy Lake Como, where he had the chance to study with top piano mentors. He has performed in recitals, and as a soloist with orchestra, in many of the most renowned concert halls of the world, Since 2017, Madrigal has been the Artistic Director of Habana Clásica, an international classical music festival held in Havana, Cuba. He has received several awards in important international piano competitions, among which is the Gold Medal Maison des Artistes, granted by the Association for Culture, Arts, Science and Social Commitment at the Sapienza University of Rome which he received in 2012.

Tickets for the concert are available via the festival website www.dubrovnik-festival.hr or the service www.ulaznice.hr, at the box office in the Festival Palace (Od Sigurate 1) every day from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and in front of the DTS building (Vukovarska St) from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
